There is one important difference between science and philosophy, however. Philosophy does not investigate the world directly, but through language invoking what Quine calls the principle of google:"semantic ascent"
. Instead of examining 'things' as science does, philosophy investigates how things are talked about and, through this, investigates the nature of the world.6
6 Quine would
reject the view that what such studies investigate is language alone. No
sharp line can be drawn between examining meanings and examining facts.
