As in the case of motives, various arguments could be invoked, reasons adduced, in order to support the claim that the scene should be looked at in a particular way. They could only have come to some agreement if they held, as it were, a framework in common whereby such disputes could have been resolved (Ryle 1966).

However, the failure to find common methods, so to speak, is not some failure of our knowledge but a characteristic of our vocabulary of action. In pointing to the essential defeasibility of action descriptions it is being claimed that the vocabulary of action is part and parcel of moral discourse and, as such, is concerned with the appraisal of conduct. In this realm of discourse what we have done or are doing has no well-defined description in ways required by positivistic science, though such descriptions work well enough in the context of action.
